Massive How To Be Black event in San Francisco on Saturday Nov 3rd.
The paperblack edition of the book comes out October 30, and when we did the round of national shows and parties for the hardcover, San Francisco drew the short stick. We are rectifying that with the biggest and best event yet featuring Bay Area comedian Kevin Camia, dancer and educator Denae Hannah, Black Grouse Whisky, and Baratunde headlining.

Come one come all. Come have a ball! Monday February 13th will feature special back-to-back events with me! I’m coming home. We’ll start with a 6:30 pm presentation/reading/Q&A at the National Press Club then move to Blackbyrd at 14th & U for the official after party.

It’s the heart of Black History Month plus How To Be Black plus Chocolate City. It doesn’t get much blacker. Come out, get books, laughs and autographs and just kick it. Blackly. Yes, I just invented a new adverb: blackly

Full event details are here on Facebook where we encourage you to RSVP so we have a count. Note that you’ll have to RSVP for the National Press Club portion (by emailing opus@press.org) which has a cover charge of $5.

He made an example. He pointed to a kid across the way and said, ‘That kid’s an Oreo.’ And I didn’t know the kid’s name at the time — I saw this nerdy black kid with glasses hanging out with white friends … And that was the first introduction of this concept, inauthentic blackness because you’re comfortable around whiteness.

Baratunde Thurston on the term ‘oreo’ (via nprfreshair). So exciting!!!

Specific ways you can help #HowToBeBlack become a best-seller

"How To Be Black" in an actual bookstore!

Update 16 Feb 2012 @ 18:16 ET: WE DID IT! We made the NYT best-seller list! Thanks so much to everyone. Now let’s make it to number 1! Below is an edited version of the original post with some ideas on how you can help.

1. BUY THE BOOK.

Right now. Just do it. If you’ve already got a copy, buy one for someone else! It’s available in all formats including hardcover at your local bookstore, all digital outlets like Kindle, Nook, iBooks plus audio! I did the voiceover myself. Visit http://howtobeblack.me/htbborder Plus if you’ve ever enjoyed my free blogging, free standup, free TV appearances or free, awesome company, this is how you can repay me.

2. BUY MANY MANY COPIES

If you have access to a large group of people: company, school, organized criminal concern, buy 50 or 100 or more. Bulk orders are available at 800 CEO Read. Bulk discounts! Contact us about customization of large orders.

3. REVIEW THE BOOK ON AMAZON

Preferably with five stars. Do it now. People on Amazon do what other people on Amazon tell them. Be a leader.

4. SPREAD WORD OF THE BOOK

Mention the book right now in your blogs, email newsletters and 3D social media content pipe-stream-nets.

On twitter, use the hashtag #HowToBeblack and mention @baratunde. On Facebook, like the book at and tag it and me in your status updates. On Tumblr, like this blog. We’ll be re-blogging items tagged “how to be black,” so post your thoughts on your own blogs with that tag for a shot at tumblr greatness

5. SHARE YOUR STORY

This book isn’t some final statement on race and identity. It’s the continuation of a conversation, and I want you to join it. The book is ultimately about “how to be,” and we’ve built a platform to get people talking about blackness and identity in general. Submit your thoughts.

6. INTRODUCE ME TO YOUR PEOPLE

Even if you don’t want it or already have it, you all know someone that needs this book, maybe a teacher or student group, a company executive, artist or misguided politician. Please consider not just forwarding this post (which I assume you’ve already done because you’re a good person) but actively introducing us to this person. Basically, I need you to introduce me to Halle Berry. I should have just said that. Use the contact page.

7. SEND YOUR LOVE AND IDEAS

This project is a big deal. The book is incredibly personal. It represents years of work and passion and blood (some people don’t know how to cooperate). If other ideas for how to help occur to you, let me know. But also know that I’d appreciate you just sending positive thoughts.

8. SUPPORT THE TOUR!

I’ll be on permanent book tour for now on. Check the schedule. Stop by, say hi, and get a book signed!

Sincerely, thank you.
