If you want a specific version of How To Be Black, your best bet is to visit your local bookstore. We don’t control what version gets shipped. There is a complex racial algorithm that determines which version of the book you need most. It’s science. Black science.
Yes.
How To Be Black is a book written by Baratunde Thurston. It combines personal memoir, interviews, irreverent how-to, and resource guides to meet every reader’s blackness needs, this book offers practical advice on everything from “How to Be The Black Friend” to “How to Be The (Next) Black President” to “How to Celebrate Black History Month.”
The core message of the book is, of course, not to convert you into a black person or administer some sort of blackness authenticity exam. Instead, it’s to explore issues of race and identity through humor and story.
We’re using this Tumblr to explore identity and what it means to be _______ (whatever you are) in the 21st century. Every day in February (and likely beyond) we’ll focus on a new question. Our favorite answers will be posted here too. The growing list of questions is online here. If you’d like to submit a question, click here. If you’d like to submit an answer, click here.
We all have experienced some gap between who we are and who the world expects us to be. This book explores that from the perspective of one articulate, hilarious black man, but the story is one with which almost anyone can identify.
Baratunde also addressed this topic this during a video chat with our Street Team—check out the video below.
